Summary of the Project:

The major challenge in this project is the achievement of an energy harvesting device (EHD) prototype used to power a smart autonomous system such as a wireless sensors network, an autonomous sensor or an array of autonomous sensors. There is an increased requirement for the development of autonomous smart systems, such as sensor arrays, which could operate for long periods of time without the need of external power supply and regular maintenance. The most promising solution is to integrate energy harvesting devices (EHDs) into such systems to allow them to operate independently. The EHD prototype based on amorphous and nanocrystalline ribbons, will be able to convert mechanical vibrations to electricity. Such an EHD having embedded wireless microsensors can provide continuous monitoring of machine and/or structural health without the expense and inconvenience of using service personal in different area with high risks.

The performance of the amorphous and/or nanocristalyne ribbon based EHD is related to:

(i) the material properties – including the use of amorphous and  nanocrystalline ribbons;

(ii) the design of the EHD – including its mechanical system and the coil;

(iii) the electrical circuits which connect to the electric power storage system.

Stage 2: Design, development and optimization of the EHD prototype (2013)

Stage 3: Testing and demonstration of the EHD prototype. Exploitation of the results, management and dissemination (2014)
